Self-Care

Thrive Emotionally, Mentally, & Physically

Have you been feeling stressed, anxious, or have you a hard time sleeping? It's not uncharacteristic and has become quite normal for many people with all 2020 has had to offer.  The Value of Self Care Taking time for self-care has a major impact in your emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing. Various strategies help to reduce stress, enhance resiliency, rejuvenate your mind to better focus on tasks at hand, and improve your emotional wellbeing. Having established self-care practices can help you improve your ability to manage and process emotions, acknowledge and handle mental and physical fatigue, and even prevent stress. Here are a handful of tips on how to improve your overall wellbeing using self-care practices.

1. Step Away From Tech It is easy to get lost in tech searching the web, reading articles, spending time on social media, and streaming videos. Relieve your brain of the constant stimulus, and take time away from technology.

2. Get A Good Night's Rest Getting a good night's rest is crucial to your self-care. Not getting enough sleep can prevent your body from properly recharging and repairing. As stress levels rise, the importance of rest becomes even more crucial. Sleep improves our serotonin levels, memory, mood, and many cognitive functions like reactions, thought processes, and decision making.

3. Recreation Try something new or reinvigorate an old hobby. Spend time doing something that brings you joy and allows you to take a mental break from everything else going on.

4. Connect with Friends and Loved Ones Reach out to friends and family, especially those you may not have connected with recently and build your social connections. If you are unable to meet in person, consider utilizing Facetime or Zoom for virtual gatherings.

Self-care looks different for every person. However, the same idea holds true for every person, "What can I do for 5 minutes today for my emotional wellbeing?"  Feel free to pick and choose the strategies that work best for you. The best option may be different given the situation at hand. Know that self-care has no set time limit and can evolve. It can be as simple as taking a walk, or calling a friend to catch up.
